The Class Work Project is back in action!

You may have noticed that we have been quiet of late. That's not because we were slugging off work; we just needed time and space to sort out some difficult back-end organisational issues and have conversations about how we will work in the future. Thank you for bearing with us during this challenging period. We are delighted to announce that the Class Work Project remodelling process is now complete, and we are back in full swing activity and in better organisational shape!

One of our main activities is workshopping, and over the past weeks, our calendar has been filling with new workshop dates. Thank you to everyone who got in touch to request one; we are very excited to be working with you all :)

Some of the more challenging sessions we are in the process of working on or have completed already are:

  • A couple of workshops for people who want to start a housing cooperative but are facing challenges and conflicts regarding differences in access to capital and wealth between various prospective members;

  • A workshop that will discuss the issues arising from class differences in the context of prisoner solidarity and support work;

  • A workshop for people from capital heavy bracket to help them in their wealth re-distribution efforts.

We are looking forward to tackling these issues, and if anybody you are reading it thinking something like, "damn, I have thoughts and experiences I could share to help them get it right", get in touch! We will protect your identity if that's your wish.

How we deliver our workshops is changing

While our Exploring Class workshop is excellent as it is, we thought it would be a good idea to remodel how we deliver it to make it a bit more accessible to a broader group of organisations and individuals. As such, we will pay more attention to shorter sessions as our flagship two-day workshop may be too much to take on in one go and require resources and time that only a handful of organisations are able or willing to offer in one go. So, while the two-day full workshop is still available, we will give more attention to shorter sessions, starting at two hours.

Similarly, we also decided to be more open to online sessions. For many, this makes our workshops easier to attend and thus more accessible. Additionally, some organisations we work with have members scattered across the country or the globe, and in-person sessions are difficult to arrange. Our openness to online sessions will also allow us to venture outside of the UK, which we intend to do, and we have some big news to share later in the year.

Migrants and class workshop

At the beginning of the year, we secured some funding for our new workshop, which will discuss the issues and barriers faced by migrants in the UK in the context of class. Since we last told you about this project, we have done a fair bit of research and work on it, interviewing dozens of people with experience of migration and class prejudice. It was all very compelling stuff, and we can't wait to turn it into a workshop.

We are still very interested in speaking with people with relevant experience to help us get this workshop right. Please get in touch if you could contribute. Your thoughts and experiences are important to us, and if we decide to interview you, we will reimburse you for your time.

As part of this project, we will also be working on a special issue of Lumpen magazine dedicated exclusively to migrant writers and will aim to describe migrant and class experience in the UK directly by those who live it. editor@theclassworkproject.com.

One thing is not changing, and never will: if you are interested in hosting our workshop but are worried about our fees, you should know we never turn anybody away due to a lack of funds. We work based on a sliding scale fee, and our scale starts with £0.

If you are interested in hosting us, or have other enquiries, please get in touch: info@theclassworkproject.com

Looking forward to hearing from you :)
